...weak; not one [who was] strong and mighty, and another [who was] powerless [and] endangered, but being one and the same unified [Person], He bore the voluntary passions. With a suppliant voice He prayed on my behalf to His essential Father; He knelt humbly—He before Whom every knee bends—[saying]: “If it is possible for humankind to be saved without my death which is written, let this cup of death pass from me; yet not by my will, but let Thine be [done].” Trembling in the fear of the flowing sweat, falling in bead-shaped drops; as an angel drew near to strengthen [Him], the scriptural word of the Law was fulfilled. For since God the Word assumed the perfect nature of humanity, it was fitting [for Him] to bear fear and sorrow in His economy [of salvation].
