Songs Nos. 33, 37, 38, 48, and 49 are sung among the [common] people in disconnected stanzas, pell-mell, about this or that person, or [various] similar incidents, etc. From many such stanzas we have taken [only] the select ones and have endeavored to [ar]range them in such a way that they ex[press] a definite meaning. The remaining 36 songs were arranged under our editorsh[ip]. The people usual[ly sing one] stanza only to some melo[dy], and then from the quatrains familiar to them, wi[thout] paying attention to the sense, sing indiscriminat[ely this] or that quatrain in con[ti]nuation. We have striv[en to make] the selection of subsequent stanzas in such a manner that all together, as far as possib[le, they] form a single whole and sui[t] the melody and the sense of the refrains. Du[ring] the use of this songbook, one must keep in mind: 1) The refrains are printed in ita[lic lett]ers and only in the first stanzas; in the [subsequent] stanzas, the same refrai[ns] should be sung after the corresponding [lin]es. 2) Except for a few words, wh[ich...]
