If, after severe pain, pus should discharge from the ear, one ought not to endeavor to check it hastily, but must proceed in this manner: Take propolis [*aknamom*], of the size of a walnut, and shredded linen cloth as much as may be required; rub them together, make wicks [or plugs], and insert [them] into the ear morning and evening; and continue in this wise until the pus be cleansed.

CHAPTER XIX. On Saint Anthony’s Fire [Erysipelas].

88. That reddish and lustrous swelling which, when you press upon it with a finger, the place whitens and immediately reddens again, is called the red wind [*karmir kʻami*, i.e., erysipelas]. Although this breaketh out upon every part of the body, yet [it doth so] especially upon the face; it beginneth from the tip of the nose or from the eyelids and gradually spreadeth to every side of the head, and sometimes it flieth from one place to another; along with it there is fever, it locketh the appetite and causeth torpor; very often the swollen place blistereth and is filled with yellow water. 89. This sickness happeneth from an abundance of blood, from fear, distress, chilling, anger, from the excessive use of heating drink and food, and for the most part unto those who have a wound (*yara*) and chill it, or whose body hath been bruised. 90. For the curing of this sickness, one must proceed in the following manner: from the day the sickness taketh hold until the recovery, thou must strive ever to bring on sweat, [and] cause the bowels to be purged every day; wherefore, every morning and evening give [the patient] to drink a sweating tea, as, for example, the boiled water of mallow, elder, and chamomile, prepared like tea. For purging, give every day, or once every two days, the medicine of Number 4, or 5, or 6. Upon the swelling apply, once every two hours, [the medicine of] Number 104, or 105, or 106.

NOTE: * They call propolis [*aknamom*] that substance with which the honey-flies [bees] daub the opening of the hive in the winter.
