[...do] not [have] snuff, or pepper, or white hellebore, let them frequently hold crushed onion, or garlic, or crushed wild mustard, or mustard kneaded with vinegar before the [victim’s] mouth and nose. It hath often happened that by laying them in ashes, many seemingly hopeless drowned persons have been brought back [to life]. 45. The signs of a drowned person’s revival are: the gradual softening of the skin, signs of the body warming, the gradual beating or fluttering of the heart, the gradual moving of the eyelids and the chest, the reddening of the visage and lips, the drawing of breath and sighing, trembling, coughing, sneezing, the coming of foam from the mouth, speaking little by little, and the like. 46. They must not place the drowned person in a fiercely heated house, nor close to a fire, nor in such a place where the wind bloweth; rather, let them warm the body little by little by rubbing [it with] warm woollen shawl or warm broadcloth. At the beginning, it is not necessary to employ harsh and violent expedients—such as rubbing with pig’s bristle (*jagar*), beating with nettles, [or] bloodletting—which are exceedingly harmful for a drowned person. But if the visage of the drowned person is turned livid, or flushed red, or bloated, or swollen, or if he be of a plethoric [habit], then it is profitable to let blood from the right arm to the measure of one *stili*, or a little more, and to bind the cut place firmly. If the bloodletter knoweth the place, it is yet better to let blood from the front vein of the neck. 47. In restoring a drowned person, it is necessary to have ready at hand: A. A board, a mattress, a quilt (*lehep*), a pillow, a towel, scraps of broadcloth or shawl, rags, pig’s bristle. B. Scissors, a knife, a spoon, apparatus for administering a clyster, large feathers of a duck or fowl, and a lancet for bloodletting. C. Hot water, a copper vessel, a teakettle, cups. D. *Arak*, vinegar, oil, soap, smelling-spirit [spirits of ammonia], spirit of Lokman [Hoffmann's drops], spirit of camphor. E. Mallow, or elder, or chamomile flowers, or mint.
