...and obtain sensation. If the frostbite be so severe that it is not possible by the said method to give movement and sensation to the frostbitten limb, [and] on the contrary, blackness should appear in that place, at that time one must scarify (*t’latel* [incise]) the frostbitten place with a razor or a sharp knife, [and] place upon it leavened bread dough mixed with chalk (see No. 91), and thereafter proceed as is written for burns in Chapter 7.
58. If the whole body be frozen from severe cold, without delay one must take [the person] into a cool room, sit [him] up to the neck in cold water, or pour snow or ice over him, and leave [him] to remain until signs of life become evident. To bring [him] to his senses, one must tickle the nose and mouth with a soft chicken feather, or burn feathers, paper, or leather before his nose, or have [him] inhale and hold before his nose spirits of sal ammoniac [*anushadri ogi*]. They must beware of immediately laying the frozen person near a fire, or bringing [him] close to a fire, for it is exceedingly harmful.
59. When the body begins to move, or other signs of life appear, at that time one must take [him] out of the water, lay [him] in a warm room in a soft bed, and give [him] to drink—at intervals of half an hour—four spoonfuls of hot water mixed with one spoonful of *oghí* [brandy/spirits], or wine sweetened with sugar or honey. Thus must they proceed until perspiration appears, and thereafter give strengthening foods, that is: broth (*khashu*) of pullet, chicken, or mutton; soup of groats [*dzavar*] or rice prepared with good butter or oil; and for drink let them use lukewarm water mixed with a little wine, [and] frequently give [him] to drink two glasses at a time of tea prepared from the flowers of mint, chamomile, mallow, or elder.
