[If it] has no sensation at all, take sourdough [bread] dough [the] size of a dove's egg and three *miskhal*s of crushed white earth* (chalk, which tailors use), mix together, and apply to the affected spot; change [it] three or four times, until the deadened spot suppurates and the blackened flesh sloughs off of its own accord. If these remedies do not help either, at that time it is necessary to show [it] to a physician.

CHAPTER VIII. On [one who is] frozen or overcome by cold.

55. It is called "frozen" or "taken by cold" when any joint or entire limb of a person becomes frozen from severe cold, or, as they say, [when] the cold "takes" it. At the place taken by the cold, the color of the skin changes, its natural warmth and sensation diminish, or it becomes completely numb. 56. The part of the body taken by the cold at first tingles [and] burns, then aches, reddens, and swells, and at last turns white; and after a few hours, if help or medicine is not applied, it will blacken and completely lose sensation. This misfortune happens frequently to villagers, who, when a part of the body is taken by the cold in winter from severe chilling, immediately run near the fire, warm [it], or lie down close [to it], which not only does not help, but also causes great harm. 57. For one who is frozen and taken by the cold, every effort must be made so that the frozen place may regain its natural color and [its] sensation be restored; therefore, the place taken by the cold must be continuously rubbed [and] massaged with a piece of soft woolen cloth, or with snow, or with ice; or [one must] place the limb in cold water for up to one hour, and after removing it from the water, apply petroleum [rock oil], or the remedy under Number 90, or duck fat, or good tar. In this manner, one must assist the frozen person within the space of about six hours, so that the limb taken by the cold may be able to move.
