[...upon it], if one puts pulverized charcoal [or ember/cinder], in a short time it will draw out its heavy stench. 3. If oil or melted butter has altered in flavor, or turned rancid, take pulverized charcoal, wrap it in a linen cloth, tie the mouth tightly, and throw it thus into the oil or butter; bring it once to a boil, and the rancidity will come out. 4. If you sprinkle water upon pulverized charcoal and place it in a vessel by the window (*p’anjara*), it will cut the smell of tobacco (*t’ambak’u*) and the smoke. 5. If one puts pulverized charcoal into the privy, or into that vessel wherein they relieve their needs, the foul odor will be dispelled. 6. If warm charcoal is wrapped in a moistened linen cloth and applied over a cloth spotted with beeswax, it will immediately draw [it] out.
258. The manner of using charcoal externally against diseases: 1. If one cleans the teeth once or twice a day with finely pulverized charcoal, it will not only dispel the breath's odor, but will also cleanse and whiten the teeth, and strengthen the gums. 2. He whose feet give off a stench, let him put charcoal and bran into his footwear and walk about thus for a few days, or let him boil charcoal in water and frequently wash his feet with it. 3. If anyone has an ulcer and it should be fetid, let him sprinkle finely pulverized charcoal upon it; the foul odor will be dispelled, and it is beneficial to the ulcer as well. 4. If a canker [or cancer] appears upon any part of the body, knead pulverized charcoal with dough and apply it upon it; in this manner, the canker will either come to a head [with pus] or will spread no further. 5. If anyone has an erupted ulcer or scabies upon the body or head, let him take half a liter of either burdock root, or wild sorrel, or bran; pour upon it three *t’unk’i*s of water, and after boiling it well, strain the water, mix into it five handfuls of pulverized charcoal, and bathe the patient with it. This is to be repeated several times every other day. Or let him take one *ch’arek’* of rendered lard or olive oil, mix into it one *ch’arek’* of finely pulverized charcoal, beat it well, and then rub it twice a day upon the ulcers.
