...diminish the [child's] nourishment; wherefore the children, losing much of their strength, become yellowish in color and feeble. Second: the worms obstruct the passage for receiving food; hence the bowels become bloated, press against the neighboring parts, and the belly swells and aches. Third: they irritate the stomach and the intestines so greatly that thence arises severe and intolerable colic, as well as convulsions, twitching, and numbness of all the sinews of the body, [and] somnambulism [or epilepsy]. To cleanse the phlegm gathered in the bowels and to expel the worm[s], use cooked *alibukhari* [Bukhara plum], or dried black damson plum, or *ghoghnooshak* [alyssum/sweet basil seed], or a little garlic boiled in milk, or raw carrot, or the strained juice of carrot; these are able to expel a great deal of worms. If no benefit comes from these, then give the child four times a day the medicine kneaded with honey, in the quantity of half a hazelnut, [as prescribed under] Number 59. 251. If the child be feeble, one must give strengthening food, and rub externally [an ointment of] wormwood, or mint, boiled in wine.
