The deficiency of milk sometimes also arises from various diseases, that is to say, from diarrhea [*p‘orabats‘ut‘iwn*] and excessive flow of blood. If it be from these causes, one must endeavor to help by means of those medicines which are written for purging and for the flux of blood (in the second part, Chapters XI and XVIII). By applying the proper remedies, the milk will increase of its own accord. 207. If the cause of the drying up [*ktruelun*] or the suppression [*yet khp‘elu*] of the milk has become the wet-nurse’s nausea [*srti shurh gal* / agitation of heart], anger, fear, sorrow, or excessive joy, one must endeavor, in order to soothe the wet-nurse’s heart, to employ suitable means against the causes confounding her. Likewise, there is to be placed upon the mother’s nipple a piece of soft shawl soaked in warm milk; it is useful also to have [the breast] suckled by the strength of another. For increasing the milk and setting in motion again that which was suppressed, the medicine under Number 73 is useful, or, having boiled one spoon of anise or dill seed in eight cups [*p‘njan*] of milk, to strain it and have [her] drink it, one small cup at a time, twice a day. 208. If, from an exceeding abundance of milk, it should flow out dripping of its own accord from the nipples and thereby cause distress to the wet-nurse, in order to moderate the milk or to strengthen the laxity of the nipples, one must proceed in this manner: A. Give a purgative medicine once a week, [under] Number 5, or 6, or 7. B. Two or three times a week, at bedtime, have [her] steep her feet in hot water. C. Have [her] wash the breasts with cold water three times a day. D. [lit. C.] Fill small bags with dried rose petals, moistened with red wine, and place [them] upon the breasts. E. Smear the silt from under a blacksmith’s whetstone (*ch‘arkh*) upon a cloth to the thickness of a finger; wrap the breasts with it; when she is to suckle the child, have [them] washed well, and afterward apply the aforesaid remedy once again.
