that is to say, fever and with it headache and the like, she must not be fed any food, but only well-cooked rice or groat *shorva* [soup], prepared with a little butter or good oil, or dried plum *spas* [soup], baked apple, or quince. For drink let them use pomegranate or lemon juice, sweetened with sugar and mixed with water. The parturient woman’s surroundings must be clean, so that uncleanness may not cause her some other sickness; her bed must be moderately warm and the air frequently refreshed; it should not be cramped and dark. 101. If after the birth of the child the afterbirth [*erekhi enker*, placenta] remains in the womb, the navel-string [umbilical cord] must be tied as stated in Article 187 and cut with scissors; it must not be pulled out by force, nor should medicaments be employed. It is far better to wait for its expulsion naturally; it is quite sufficient, in order to assist nature, to rub the belly gently with the hand, or to bind the belly lightly with a broad cloth. By thus pressing upon the belly, abdominal pains will be induced, and the afterbirth will detach of itself and come out. If within half an hour it does not come out of its own accord, then it is necessary to resort to the aid of a physician. 192. In the villages, the midwives [*tat*s], failing to comprehend what harm may ensue, through ignorance strive to deliver the parturient woman quickly of the afterbirth remaining in the womb; and they counsel her to cough forcefully, to sneeze, to bear down, to press upon the belly with her hand, and at times they even shake the parturient woman or carelessly pull upon the umbilical cord [*porti aghik*]. From such manner of handling arise the dreadful consequences mentioned below: 193. From such manner of handling arises inflammatory fever, which is distinguished from the milk-ague [milk fever] by the following signs: The signs of the milk-ague are mild, but those of the inflammatory blood-ague are exceedingly unbearable; for instance, the heat is continuous (unbroken), the pulse-beat fast and hard, the belly distended, and aching so severely that she cannot even bear the touch of a hand; sometimes also upon the belly blister-like eruptions [appear...]
