...is [present] and smarts when passing water (this usually occurs at the onset of the disease), they must administer remedy numbered 46, and at the same time cause [the patient] to drink remedy numbered 47 or 48. The patient must wash the body with warm milk, or with warm water, or with the remedy of number 49. It is far better to place the member in warm milk or in the remedy of number 49 and keep it therein for a sufficient time, repeating this four times a day, whereby the smarting will diminish and it will draw out the venomous potency of the virulent matter. When the virulent matter discharges easily and without pain, then one must administer remedy numbered 50, one cup at a time, six times a day.* If it should happen that the skin of the body [member] swells and does not retract, then one must proceed as written in article 134. 144. If it should happen that one or both of the testicles are swollen,* they must first suspend [them], as is written in the counsel numbered 53, and afterwards administer remedy numbered 46; and further, they must moisten a piece of cloth in the remedy of number 54 and apply it frequently upon the testicles, or apply the remedy numbered 52. If the pain of the testicles be severe and does not abate with the remedies mentioned above, then they must let three cups of blood from the arm; or, beginning from the soft part of the testicle on whichever side aches, all the way to the groin, they must apply 15 leeches. In a word, beginning from the testicles up to the groin—wherever it aches upon touching, save for the testicles [themselves]—let a sufficient amount of blood flow, having regard to the constitution of the patient. Strive that the patient’s bowels be not bound, for the reason that the pain will increase all the more. If the bowels be bound, give a mild laxative remedy numbered 4, or 5, or 6. 145. If the glands (*msank’*) of the groin should swell and become inflamed, one must apply upon them the remedy numbered 52 until it comes to a head (the ripening of the tumor is recognized by its softening...

NOTE: *) When a man hath the gonorrhoea [clap], it sometimes happeneth that the testicles swell and ache intolerably, like unto a rupture [hernia]; yet it is not a rupture, but a sign that the venom formed in the urinary tract hath descended, causing swelling and hardening in the groin. This ariseth commonly from improper medication, from abruptly suppressing the discharge [by astringents], or from catching cold, or from heating [spirituous] liquors, and other like causes. The first remedy to preserve [the patient] from this affliction is the suspensory [truss or bandage]. From the very onset, as soon as the gonorrhoea appeareth, one must bind up the testicles, and not remove [the bandage] until [the disease is] completely healed.
