141. If pus passes from the urinary passage, [and] it burns while urinating and hurts when [the member] is stretched [erect], this affliction is called lust-born flux (*susunak* [gonorrhea]). 142. As to how this disease begins, here are its symptoms: A. Suddenly, a yellowish pus appears from the urinary passage, and it gradually increases. B. At the time of urinating it burns, and afterwards hurts so much that it gives the man no rest, especially at night, whenever the body [member] stretches [becomes erect],*) because the urinary passage is drawn together [and] contracted, wherefore when it stretches, it hurts severely. C. Sometimes it also happens that the skin of the body [member] swells, and [that] prematurely. D. When the venom [discharge] is checked, or through the use of improper medicines, and it does not recede. A man possessed of this disease will chance to suffer great pain and swelling in one or both of the groins (*erank‘*), [that is,] the kernels (*msank‘* [glands])**). 145. CHAPTER XVI. On the Venereal Flux (*Susunak*) [Gonorrhea].

[...the na]ture [of the malady is such] that if care is not taken from the beginning to heal it entirely with proper medicine, its poison will remain in the blood, and after five [or] ten years it will come to light, and the disease will renew itself; and sometimes this ailment even becometh hereditary for [one's] children. Many youths contract this ailment, and marrying before being cured by regular medicine, their children—almost all of them—bring into the world with them the seeds of sundry diseases; or else those who have contracted this ailment do not beget children at all.

NOTE: *) During this illness, the body is almost incessantly cramped and in pain; the primary remedy for this is crushed camphor, of which you must take one *msxal* [approx. 4.5 grams] and tie it in the groin, so that [the patient] walks about in this manner for up to ten days. **) In Latin this ailment is called *bubo*, which may occur on one or both sides; it will be painful until it either suppurates [bursts] or recedes.
