109. Frequent purging without chills and without bellyache is called mild looseness of the bowels [diarrhea]. 110. The signs of this affliction are: nausea, bitterness in the mouth, belching with the taste of sourness or rancid oil, rumbling in the bowels, revulsion toward food and especially toward meats, and the tongue being coated with yellow bile. 111. This kind of purging is sometimes helpful in preventing other diseases, because it stirs up and expels the harmful humors gathered in the stomach, frees [the body] from other formidable ailments, and strengthens the stomach. When such purging occurs, it is not necessary to administer medicine; one must only beware of all rich (fatty) foods, and still more of all kinds of meat, hard-boiled or firmly roasted eggs, and other such things that are difficult to digest. 112. If the looseness of the bowels should last for more than five days, and the patient feels a decline in strength, griping, or pain in the belly, then, in order to bind the belly, one must proceed in the following manner: A. If, upon belching, [the patient] perceives a sour or acrid taste in the mouth, or if a foul odor comes from the mouth, they must be made to drink, two or three times a day, half a spoonful of finely crushed *gortsli* [ipecacuanha / purgative root] with water; see Chapter 31. B. If there occurs nausea, bitterness in the mouth, and revulsion toward food, they must be given medicine Number 3. C. If [the patient] feels a rumbling in the bowels and nausea along with it, they must be given a purging medicine, Number 4, or 5, or 6, or 7, or 8; and in place of water, they must be made to drink well-toasted bread water or medicine Number 37; and care must be taken that the patient does not go out without warm clothing.
