... gradually spreading, they mingle with one another and unite like the measles, at that time one must apply the medicine and act in the same manner as is written for the measles.

CHAPTER IX. On Scarlet Fever.

93. [95.] Scarlet fever [*kʻutʻēsh*] is that disease called which breaks out upon the body in red spots; the throat hurts, and after six or nine days the skin of the body peels off in pieces. 94. These spots break out at first from the front part of the shoulders and upon the arms, and after a few days they begin to spread over the entire body and join together, except for the face. This is distinguished from measles [*karmruk*] by this, that it does not have coughing, sneezing, [or] thin matter running from the eyes; and furthermore, upon the turning back of measles the skin sheds like bran, while that of scarlet fever [sheds] in pieces. 95. At the onset of scarlet fever the patient is weak, is slightly chilled, [and] has a fever that increases at night; the pulse beats rapidly, the throat and the neck ache, the sinews twitch, and he talks to himself [in delirium]. Oftentimes this ailment falls [only] upon the throat; it breaks out upon the body very little, or it does not break out at all, only at the end the skin of the body sheds in pieces; or else a dropsical swelling comes upon the patient. There is no other disease having such inconsistent symptoms as this. 96. Oftentimes this disease takes hold with more severe symptoms, for instance: the throat hurts severely, a foul odor comes from the mouth, [and] it has inflammation, putrefaction, and inflammation of the brain. One seized by this fearful disease must be kept lying in bed, if it is summer, for three weeks, and if winter, for six weeks, and always warm. 97. If this disease comes with mild symptoms, no other medicine is needed, only to keep the belly soft by giving a mild laxative, and to feed [the patient] easily digestible food.
