[...from] it, he suddenly leaps up and begins to talk to himself (to rave).
78. On the third or fourth day, it passeth into the second stage; a slight sweat appeareth, and for up to three days small spots begin to break out upon the countenance, in the throat (*boghaz*), and in other parts of the body, which gradually unite and fill up. At this time the patient feeleth a sore throat and fever, which easeth after the smallpox breaketh out.
79. On the sixth or seventh day, it passeth into the third stage. The smallpox pustule formeth pus (*zhahr*); and the sooner it beginneth to suppurate, the better the sign; on the contrary, late suppuration is perilous. At this time, the spaces between the smallpox sores redden, the pustules rise, causing considerable pain throughout the whole body; fever flareth up, and the blisters begin to fill with white or yellow pus. The eyelids, hands, and feet gradually swell, and thereafter the eyes are closed [shut], and at times sleep also fleeth.
80. Around the eleventh day, the fourth stage beginneth, which lasteth until around the fourteenth day. At that time the fever lesseneth, the smallpox sores begin to dry and fall off, and in their place remain red marks, at times resembling [flesh that hath been] snipped or patched.
81. If the patient be in good condition, it is not necessary to administer medicine to him; only care must be taken that the air of the place where the patient lieth be moderately warm, and that they frequently open the window or the door, so that the air may be renewed. From the day the smallpox beginneth, the patient must be kept somewhat cool, but while the smallpox is breaking out, warm. Let them give light and easily digestible food, for instance, rice or bulgur soup (*shorva*), dried black prunes, stewed or roasted apples, or quinces. For drink, let them give pomegranate juice, or lemon, or barberry, or verjuice (*zhur*) cordial, prepared mixed with water and sugar or good honey. When he who hath fallen [ill with] smallpox hath perilous signs, they must proceed as [directed] in the article below
