[It] must be kept [on] until perspiration breaks out, or as much as the patient can endure. 62. After letting blood for the first time, give the patient medicine number 31 to drink, and instead of water, have him drink barley-water. Examine the phlegm attentively; if you see the good signs written above, it appears that the outcome for the patient will be good. Endeavor by every means to soften the chest by giving him to drink, very warm and very frequently, of medicines numbered 32 or 33. 63. If, upon coughing, the phlegm comes up easily, thick and mixed with blood, or without blood, at that time letting blood and the use of purgative and diaphoretic medicines is very harmful. In general, in this illness, they must keep the patient quiet, the house moderately warm, [and] they must open the window and the door very frequently so that the air may be renewed. If in this condition the stabbing [pain] in the patient's chest does not increase, he has no chills either, and the beating of the artery of the arm ([the] *namz*) progressively improves, at that time drinking barley-water alone is sufficient. 64. Sometimes it also happens that the patient’s phlegm is suddenly cut off, whereby the patient becomes very distressed, his drawing breath becomes difficult, and his chest becomes tight; this too is a bad sign. If such a sudden change should occur, they must let blood from the arm and have him drink, like tea, the boiled medicine numbered 32. 65. On the seventh, ninth, or fourteenth day, if perspiration should break out over the patient's entire body, or if the flow of urine should increase and a brick-colored sediment (*til*) should settle at the bottom, or if it should produce a loosening [of the bowels], and thereby the pain should diminish, these signs portend that the patient is to recover. Perspiration or purging are not considered beneficial if the signs of the disease do not diminish along with them, but, on the contrary, become more severe. 66. When the patient recovers, they must carefully carry out what is written in article 55, and use food as is stated in article 37.
