...from [the]... 4. If the stitch in the chest jumps from one place to another, this too is a good sign. If the stabbing pain does not diminish in one place, and on the contrary strikes violently and equally in one or many other places, then, according to the severity of the stabbing pain and the increase of the shivering, the patient's condition will likewise be perilous.
61. The method of curing this disease is this:
A. In the patient's eating and drinking, that order of caution must be observed as is written in Article 27, and the medicine under Number 18 must be given to drink frequently.
B. After the shivering subsides, let them draw blood from that arm on whichever side the pain is felt more. If, even after bloodletting, the pain does not diminish and is accompanied by a dry cough, [and] the pulse of the arm beats rapidly and forcefully, then let them bleed again from that same arm. If, even by this, the symptoms of the disease do not diminish, they must bleed [the patient] three times in succession. But if the patient experiences relief with the first bloodletting, drawing it a second time is superfluous. If the patient expectorates blood-streaked phlegm when coughing, bloodletting is very necessary (if the phlegm comes up thick, yellow, and blood-streaked, bloodletting is harmful, because it might cut off the phlegm that has begun to loosen of itself).
C. After bloodletting, if the heat of the body decreases but the pain is not relieved, they must apply medicine Number 23, of the size of a hand, onto the place where it hurts, and leave it on until the skin blisters well, and proceed as is written in Article 37; but if they find it difficult to use this medicine, let them rub camphor oil onto the place where it hurts; see Number 30. More beneficial than this is to knead sour dough with mustard and apply [it] over the painful area.
D. Whenever you see that the dry cough and the stabbing pain persist, then administer vapor (*bugh*) with the medicine of Number 27.
E. If there be costiveness in the belly, give a laxative medicine, or an enema (*hoknay*), or [insert] through the seat a [suppository of] scraped soap of a finger's thickness, smeared with oil.
F. Sometimes, putting the feet up to the knees into warm water, into which...
