...[he] bears [it]; upon holding the breath or letting [it] out, it diminishes; it causeth a dry cough, and at times blood also cometh with the cough; he hath a headache, the mouth drieth up, and the visage becometh red; he talketh to himself; the skin of the entire body is dry, the urine scanty and red. These symptoms become more severe at night, and at times [he] feeleth nausea or hath a looseness of the bowels [diarrhea]. 58. If the stitch in the breast hath arisen from wind, or from phlegm [mucus] gathered in the stomach and the bowels, this malady shall be distinguished from the inflammatory stitch of the breast by this: that it doth not cause trembling [chills] as that doth, nor doth the breast pain upon drawing breath. 59. If the chest of one having an inflammatory stitch of the breast be well-developed [full], and hath not been damaged by any other cause, and he hath not been sick with a disease of the breast prior to this malady, then he shall easily recover by the application of beneficial remedies. 60. In order to foretell easily from the beginning what manner of end this malady may have, heed must be paid to the signs written below: A. If, on the second, third, or fourth day of the malady, thick, whitish phlegm cometh from the sick man’s mouth, and within it appear hair-thin streaks of blood, or if the phlegm cometh easily, these are good signs; but if there cometh only blood, or yellow, or green, or black phlegm, it signifieth that the end is bad. B. If no phlegm whatsoever cometh from the mouth of the sick man until the fourth day, it is more perilous; but if during this time the urine cometh sufficiently, and if they collect and keep [it], and after twelve hours see that a dregs of the color of *aghri* (brick) hath settled at the bottom, this is to be accounted a very good sign, and it is to be hoped that the sick man shall recover through sweating upon the seventh, or upon the ninth, or upon the eleventh day. But if the sweat appeareth from the day he fell sick, and the pain doth not diminish thereby, then it is still perilous. C. At times it also happeneth that some recover from such a malady by a gushing of blood from the nose...
