36. A piercing [pain] in the chest like a spit, and along with it a feeling of heat throughout the entire body, is called an inflammatory stitch [*khet‘k‘*]. 37. This illness begins, according to the degree of inflammation, with shivering, anxiety [or nausea], and agitation; it gives off heat and brings chills; the pulse (*namz*) of the arm feels full and strong; the entire chest together, or one side of it, pains severely; when drawing breath, the pain in-

and become a swelling, wherefore it is necessary to employ softening medicines. Have [the patient] rinse the mouth and throat very frequently with the medicine written in number 29, and upon the throat from the outside apply a softening poultice (*khashil*), see number 34. When thou seest that the white pustules erupted upon the afflicted place inside the throat are diminishing, know that it is about to suppurate; and when the swelling matures and ruptures, have [the patient] rinse the mouth all the way to the throat very frequently with the medicine written in number 27 or 28. 35. Sometimes the uvula and the throat inside have not changed their natural color, but only swallowing becomes difficult; this happeneth from coldness of the uvula, or from swelling, or from glands (*msank’*). At this time, if the patient feeleth no headache and fever, seat [him] in warm water up to the loins, and have [him] rinse the mouth very frequently with the medicine indicated in number 27 or 28, [administered] quite warm. 34. If, in some of those having a sore throat, there occurreth—apart from the signs written above—also a loss of appetite and nausea, and the tongue be likewise coated with white or yellow phlegm, thou must administer by mouth a purgative medicine; see number 1, or 2, and or 3. 35. When the patient feeleth improvement, in the matter of food thou must proceed as is written in article 37, and guard [him] against catching cold.
