[... be struck dumb?] and gradually grow weak; the tongue become dry, drawn inward, and tremble; the voice alter and he begin to pant; the lips droop; the nose grow sharp and pinched; a cold sweat break out upon the forehead; and he pass his hands over the bedclothes or the coverlet and move his fingers as if to pluck something; he lose his senses; void his bowels or pass urine in bed, and desire to change his place very frequently; these signs show that the sick man is in a very desperate state. 39. There are many diverse causes for the onset of [this] burning fever [*harink‘*]: for example, excessive and violent labor; very hot and dry summer weather; heating and potent (fiery) drinks; spoiled and corrupt foods; dwelling in a cramped, damp, and filthy place; drinking cold water while sweating or fatigued;* lying down in the open air or in a damp place; sunstroke; and also being unprepared against catching such contagious diseases.

CHAPTER III. On the Shivering [or Chills] and Cough Arising from Catching Cold.

40. The symptoms of chills arising from catching cold are: when the patient feels a creeping, shivering sensation throughout the entire body, as during ordinary chills, and at the same time has a catarrhal cough and runs a fever at night. 41. This illness comes to light during the changing of the seasons, especially when intensely sultry and hot weather suddenly turns cold or damp. This affliction likewise occurs frequently among those who grow hot and sweat from heavy labor, or stay under the sun for a long time, or partake of overly fiery (strong) and heating drink, or [remain in] damp, and especially drafty, windy pl[aces]...

*) Upon coming out of the bath, [or] when weary, sweating, or severely overheated, drinking cold water is exceedingly harmful. If anyone is thirsty at such a time, let him drink little and by slow degrees, and let the water not be cold; indeed, even a horse is not given water to drink when it is weary.
