[...must] be clean; when changing clothes, they must warm [them]. The patient's surroundings must be very clean, and the house moderately warm. They must frequently renew the air inside the house by opening the window or the doors from time to time. Once or twice a day, they must sprinkle vinegar over a heated brick so that the air inside the house may be cleansed, or [else] fumigate [with] the medicine described in number 78 or 79. 13. All soiled clothes, even a child’s, must be carried out immediately. Washed clothes must not be dried in the [same] room where the sick person lies; it is harmful even to healthy people. 14. The patient must not lie near a fire, a *tonir* [pit-oven], or a stove, nor should [he] go outside thinly dressed. The place where the patient lies must not be cramped, nor dark. They must not lay the patient down in a place where beasts dwell (1). Likewise, they must not trouble him by speaking in a very loud voice, nor cover him too warmly, as has become the custom in our lands—where, in every kind of sickness, they immediately strive to bring on a sweat in the patient quickly, because they believe that every illness must heal by bringing on a sweat. For this reason, unseasonably and at once, they will cast several quilts or woolen covers over the sick person and will sit all around the edges [of the bedding]; by doing so, they further inflame and intensify the circulation of his blood and bring about various kinds of ailments. The rule of medicine requires that even if it be necessary to bring on a sweat in the sick person, even then they must not act in that manner, but moderately; yet let them strive to keep the house warm and take care that at night the patient’s covering does not fall away and he catch cold, for sweat comes forth mostly in the night. 15. The sick person’s food, whatever it be, must not be decayed, putrid, or moldy, nor excessively oily, but modera[tely...]

NOTE: (1) It is very harmful, even for a healthy man, to dwell together with beasts; wherefore I advise our peasants to keep away from this pernicious custom.
