[...let it] be known, “If any man have ears to hear, let him hear” (Matt. 10:26; Mark 4:23). These [men] boast in words alone in the name of our holy Father Grigor Lusaworich‘, calling themselves Lusaworch‘akan Armenians, which is to say: followers of the orthodox doctrine of Saint Grigor Lusaworich‘. But behold here how they refute and reject the sound, Evangelical, and Apostolic doctrine of that very great High Priest of ours and holy Father Grigor Lusaworich‘, writing (in Art. 3) thus: “We offer full faith in the doctrine of purgatory, according to which the holy Church singeth: ‘The fire is quenched, darkness is repelled... that there may be remission of sins.’” This confession of words is contrary, and in every respect opposed, to the luminous, orthodox, and true doctrine of our holy Father Grigor; for he himself, the Illuminator of our souls, calleth that place an *abode* [kayan], where the souls of transgressing sinners abide. As he writeth: “And all these threats against transgressors keep the souls of sinners in great sorrow in the abodes” (Yachakhapatum, Discourse 15).
Being in this abode with venial sins, and having lost the means and time of complete confession and penance, the souls of the deceased find remission of their sins through the redemptive grace of the holy and propitiatory immortal Sacrifice [Patarag], and become inheritors of the glory of the Kingdom with all the saints. Unto this, Saint Grigor Lusaworich‘ writeth: “And in offering the awful, dreadful, and saving Mystery, he there remembereth the benefits of His love for mankind, and with fervent tears beseecheth expiation for the living and the dead, and thereby that which is sought” (Yachakhapatum, Discourse 14).
Prior to their writing those delusive vanities, it behoved them to be discipled and also to learn from Nersēs Lambronats‘i, the holy Archbishop of Tarsus of the Cilicians, who, in accordance with the Holy Scriptures and the words of our great Patriarch Saint Grigor, writeth thus (in the *Commentary on the Mystery and the Holy Patarag*): “Wherefore also he seeketh rest for them from the beneficent God with the saints; for as hath been shown many times, the dwelling-place of the souls of the dead is distinct from one another, and this is yet more evident from the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man” (Jerusalem edition, page 126).
