...of ours, the holy Apostle Paul beareth witness: “With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Eph. iv. 2–6). It is this holy, true Christian religion of ours, then, that doth hearten and embolden the power of our mind and the capacity of our spirit, by bringing to our remembrance the encouraging words of the holy Apostle Paul: “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ [Jesus] that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us” (Rom. viii. 31–34). And the holy Apostle James maketh this same truth manifest, rebuking the insolent judgment of those who slander and defame their brethren contrary to the divinely established law of brotherly love; wherefore he plainly writeth: “Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one lawgiver [and judge], who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?” (Jas. iv. 11–12 [13]). Looking with earnest intent upon all these meanings of the Holy Scriptures and the evangelical teachings of the holy Apostles, and comparing all this with the errant and reprehensible words of the audacious judgment of those who have presumed to write that “Our orthodox religion differeth in this respect from that of the Armenians of Ejmiatsin,” we plainly deduce that certain men, despairing of their own lives, for the diversion of their idle persons, have sought by arbitrary fabrication to frame and devise some unstable new religion; just as formerly, in the days of the Apostles, there arose...
