[Be] helpful to the needy and destitute. Overcome adversity with courage; be not utterly cast down by evil misfortunes. Be peaceable, pleasing unto all, [and] a reconciling mediator among [thy] companions. Seek not vengeance upon him that harmeth thee, but rather do good unto him. Reprove thy friend in private, yet with gentleness and not harshly. Scorn no one in thine heart; honor men according to [their] station. Cast not [thy] good deeds in the teeth [of others]; count them among thy secret affairs. Unto thy poor and needy friend be generous, according to thine ability. Bridle the nascent passion of thy wrath; suffer not fury to overpower thee. Speak naught else of the stranger save that which is good, as is fitting for him. Be grateful unto thy benefactor; shrink vehemently from ingratitude. Rejoice when thou doest good unto anyone; grant [aid] unto the needy without ostentation. Deliberate at length first and foremost, and only then speak, as the occasion may require.
