[...as we] said before, deeming [their own tongue] a useless and vile language, they speak a foreign tongue, and teach the same to their children as well. Let alone those who, if someone should happen to converse with a foreigner in unmixed and pure vernacular [Armenian], mock such a person. In this place, it is impossible in a few words to make such [people] understand the nobility of the Armenian tongue. Firstly, that it is the first and mother tongue of the world, which passed from the forefather Adam to the patriarch Noy; and after the Deluge, Noy’s ark rested in the land of Hayastan, upon Mount Ararat; Noy went forth with his family [and] dwelt in the land of Nakhijevan. And when, in the land of Babel, the language of those who were there was confounded as a punishment for the building of the tower, the language of Noy and of his family, and of the others dwelling in Hayastan, remained unmixed. And when our patriarch Hayk came from Babel to Hayastan—at which time Noy was [still] alive—he too [spoke] the language of Noy and of the other inhabitants of Hayastan...
