...they speak a foreign tongue among [their own], and their children, learning thus, remain entirely unfamiliar with and ignorant of their native language. Just as has indeed happened to the Armenian inhabitants of several lands, who understand neither the books nor the Gospel; they savor the taste neither of the divine liturgy nor of the readings of the Holy Mass, but during the service, they enter and pray as if in the church of some other Christian nation, and come away without tasting of spiritual sweetness. And if we are to reflect carefully [upon it], many other harms and miseries can arise from hatred of one’s nation, rendering the entire nation wretched and pitiful. It is only the virtue of patriotism that removes these evils and, as far as possible, makes the nation prosperous and happy. 4. The patriot rejoices and glories in the well-being of his nation, and grieves and sorrows from the heart over its shortcomings, and, as much as lies in his power, renders it aid.
