...it healeth harmful pestilence and sickness. Contrary thereto, hatred of one's own nation is so vile and harmful a vice that it hath all other vices conjoined with it. First, because through hatred of the nation all good order is disrupted; the great and the small, the rich and the poor, perform not the obligations appertaining to their station, nor do they do that which is worthy and becoming unto them. Neither doth the great show compassion and care unto the small, nor doth the small render obedience unto the great; neither doth the servant serve with a simple heart, nor doth the master make just recompense for his labor. Secondly, because justice, which is the regulator of the other virtues, also perverteth its rectitude; wherefore the patriot receiveth not the honor and thanksgiving worthy of his deeds beneficial to the nation. The benefactor cannot receive a reward commensurate with his fruitful strivings. The slanderer and the sycophant abundantly enjoy benefits in prosperity.
