For the slothful [man] acts in boredom, sitting idle; he passes his day much of the time in sleep, whereby the nerves (the *sinirs*) grow slack and feeble, and the body loses its natural strength. The appetite (the *ishtah*) is likewise closed up; he perceives not the flavor of what he has eaten, nor can he digest [it]; whereby he becomes possessed of diverse ailments and grows sickly. [3.] By labor, a man—in whatever condition and station he may be—is able to earn his livelihood, and is not distressed to provide for his necessary wants. But the slothful [man], fleeing from labor, foolishly lets slip through his fingers the season of his prosperity and gain; and when he falls into poverty and straits, he regrets [it] and seeks [remedy], but what profits it, seeing that he strives in vain and cannot find [it]?
