Wheresoever a man’s mind is, there he himself is accounted to be. Therefore, if a boy taketh his lesson in the schoolhouse, but his mind wandereth elsewhere, his body alone is in the schoolhouse, and not he himself; the ear heareth, [yet] the intellect heareth not. For this reason, some boys take lessons for a great while, yet learn nothing. b. It is necessary that in the evenings, at home, he should read anew the lessons he hath received, and ruminate upon them; and those things which he hath not well understood, he should come the next day to ask of the schoolmaster and be informed. c. When he entereth into a menial trade or into commerce, he ought not to abandon reading and writing, so that the things he hath learned may be established in his mind and increase, lest both the master’s and his own labor be in vain. d. He ought to consider the reading of books as a delightful diversion for himself, and when he is alone, he should occupy himself (*eylenmish ëllan*) therewith, and not squander time in vain and empty games (*oyinnerov*).
