CHAPTER I: The Love of Learning.

Studiousness is an exertion whereby those who diligently pursue it attain understanding of divine and human sciences. They are called learned when they are acquainted with scholarly subjects, that is: Grammar, Rhetoric, Logic, and Philosophy, which are commonly called the "liberal arts"; the study of these is fitting for all laymen and ecclesiastics. They are called wise when they are adept in subtle divine matters, that is: the nature of angels, the faculties of the soul, the ineffable divine perfections, and other supernatural matters, which collectively under a single name are called "Theology"; the study of these is fitting for ecclesiastics. 1. He who pursues studiousness must, while receiving instruction, keep his mind fixed upon it, not scatter [his thoughts] hither and thither, and remain attentive with eager appetite.
