Let us render recompense according to our ability for the labor of him who labored over us. And truly, the nurture and the learning which we receive from the schoolmaster have no commensurate price; hence, the payment which we render in return only maketh us grateful, for ingratitude is a great evil. Wherefore the Apostle saith: “Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things” [Gal. 6:6]. Fourth, we must not be grieved when he rebuketh and reproveth us for our faults, nor should we deem that he hateth us; but rather we ought to recognize that he hath the greater compassion and love toward us, and is one that striveth for our good. For as Aristotle saith: “Our parents are the cause of our being, but our schoolmasters of our well-being.” Therefore, in whatsoever manner one ought to conduct oneself toward a master of learning, in like manner also must one deal with the master craftsman who teacheth a corporeal trade. Wherefore, we must not forget the master’s benefactions.
