Submit yourselves to every human ordinance for the Lord’s sake: whether unto the king, as supreme; or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well (I Pet. 2:13[-14]). 4. We must willingly pay the royal dues and taxes imposed upon us as our duty; even if it be burdensome, we must yet endeavor to pay in due time without murmuring—not solely out of fear, but also for the sake of the judgment of our conscience, which inwardly prompteth us that [we] are obliged to be subject and to render payment. As the Apostle saith: *Wherefore ye must needs be subject [unto kings], not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake;* and again: *Render to each their dues: tribute to whom tribute [is due]; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear* (Rom. 13:5, 7).
