[...know] his disposition and inclination, whether he can bear jesting or scowls [at it]; for there are some who take offense and take no pleasure [in it] at all. 9. One must observe and take care lest we make someone's natural defect, deformity, or blemish the subject of jesting and mention [it] in company, which brings shame upon that person; for instead of joy, sorrow has oft-times arisen from such words. 10. In jesting, one must beware of all abusive, harsh, and heart-wounding words; for by this means we turn a companion's love into hatred, and vainly become the cause of ruining friendship. 11. Great prudence is required when a superior jests with us; lest a common person utter such words as may touch upon the honor of the superior; rather, one must conduct oneself with humility and always maintain the honor of the superior. For those who foolishly take liberties have oft-times suffered contempt and injury.
