...[rather than] hastily bringing [it] out before people; but take [it] gently with your hand: if you have a plate, place it to one side thereof; and if you have none, place it upon the table before you. But if it be a repulsive thing, go out upon some pretext, and cast [it] away without showing [it] to anyone. Likewise, if there be a bone or a pit in the food you have eaten, do not cast [it] from your mouth by bending your head over the plate or upon the table as though spitting; but take [it] with your hand, and set [it] down in that manner. 9. Do not hold a spoon or fork with a soiled hand; neither take salt from the saltcellar; nor scratch your head or your body. 10. If you have food in your mouth, do not converse with anyone until you have swallowed [it], neither drink water nor wine. 11. In drinking, do not snort through the nose; neither drink by making a gulping sound; nor sigh after drinking; and do not wipe your lips by sucking [them], or with the tongue, or with the hand, but with the cloth [napkin] upon you.
