[... have prescribed diverse] remedies and cures, whereby the sick may be freed from their mortal afflictions and restored to health. In like manner also, courteous persons have established diverse rules for the correction of diverse shortcomings, whereby foolish youths and uncouth men may reform their disorderliness, emerge from a savage state, and become civil. And thus, by regulating their speech and their deportment through outward good order, they may gradually acquire moral virtue; whereby they may recognize and fulfill their duty according to the place, according to the person, and according to the time, and lead a tranquil and happy life. Authors have transmitted rules of many sorts concerning proper conduct; as for us, having culled from among them such as are suitable to our time and place, we have set [them] down—first and foremost, those necessary for the children of the schoolhouse, and thereafter the rules fitting for each age and station, so that it may be profitable unto all.
