Having diverse dispositions and desires, [men] find themselves in diverse conditions, and stand in need of one another’s assistance. For this reason did men begin to build villages and cities, and to dwell together, so that they might render mutual aid and supply one another’s want. And indeed, the plowman could not till the earth if the blacksmith did not fashion the plowshare and the sickle. The weaver could not produce cloth if the carpenter did not construct the loom and the tools. Wherefore, there was need for every man of such a virtue whereby he might conduct himself well with men of diverse dispositions and diverse conditions, be pleasing unto all, and supply his [own] needs; and this virtue is that which is called Politeness [or Civility]. Politeness is the virtue whereby a man ordereth his speech and his deeds in society and in civil intercourse. And just as skillful physicians [apply] diverse [remedies] unto diverse ailments and diseases...
